Dr. Ulla Bunz

Assistant Professor, Department of Communication
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

Hi - my name is Ulla Bunz and in 2004/2005 I m a third-year Assistant Professor in (Technology-) Mediated Communication in the Department of Communication at Rutgers University. Since I first failed a junior high programming class because I was still working on weekly assignment #2 by the end of the semester, my fascination with technology and my abilities to use this technology have increased drastically. Now, my main area of research focuses on technological aptitude which I define as a person's ability to understand, appropriate, and effectively use current and future computer and internet technologies (and which encompasses a whole bunch of stuff which is why I am currently developing an inventory of concepts). I also tap into other topics, such as instructional technology. Most recently I have ventured into the field of cybergeography which is fascinating, but requires me to learn a whole new set of methodological skills. I am also active in the Association of Internet Researchers.

I grew up in Brussels, Belgium, and have since lived on three continents. From Belgium I moved to Germany to start college, then Mobile, AL, where I got a BA in Corporate and Public Communication and an MA in Communication at the University of South Alabama. From there I moved to Lawrence, KS to start my PhD program at the University of Kansas, but interrupted that to go to New Zealand and the University of Waikato in Hamilton for 6 months. Then I returned to Kansas, graduated, and moved to New Jersey. For more information on my professional life you can visit my website at http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/~bunz but for more information on my personal life, you actually have to talk to me.
